TESTING FUEL FOR ALCOHOL
Most of the fuel that is available today contains alcohol. Although we prefer fuel with no alcohol, Indmar engines are designed to tolerate fuel containing up to 10% alcohol. If you have some abnormal engine operating conditions, one thing you may want to verify is if the fuel contains more alcohol than allowed. It is easy to do. All you need is a 10cc syringe like the one shown here (Fig. A), a fuel sample and some water. Here is the procedure:

If you have some abnormal engine operating conditions, one thing you may want to verify is if the fuel contains more alcohol than allowed. It is easy to do. All you need is a 10cc syringe like the one shown here (Fig. A), a fuel sample and some water. Here is the procedure:
- Draw 1cc of water into the syringe (Fig. B)
- Draw fuel into the syringe up to the 10cc mark. (Fig. C)
- Shake the syringe vigorously then let it sit for 5 minutes.
- After 5 minutes, check the syringe. You will see a separation line. If alcohol is present in the fuel, the volume of the lower layer, which would now contain alcohol and water, will be greater than 1cc. For example, if the volume of the lower level is increased to 2cc as in Fig. D, this indicates at least 10% alcohol in the fuel. The actual amount of alcohol may be somewhat greater because this procedure does not extract all of the alcohol from the fuel.

Biobutanol-Blended Gasoline
Engines covered by this manual have been approved by Indmar for operation on gasoline blended with 16% Biobutanol, or Bu16. Use of Biobutanol will not void the warranty of Indmar gasoline engines.
Indmar and the National Marine Manufacturers Association encourage the use of Biobutanol in marine engines.
Biobutanol (either isobutanol or n-butanol) is created from biomass and is blended with gasoline to help meet renewable fuel mandates and clean air standards. Bu16 contains a higher percentage (16%) of renewable fuels than traditional E10 gasoline (10%), without sacrificing engine performance or reliability.
Bu16 can be mixed with any E10 or other approved fuel already in the boat’s fuel tank(s).
Biobutanol is chemically different from ethanol and does not have ethanol’s negative characteristics when blended in fuel. The Bu16 fuel blend does not absorb water like E10; the phase separation common in E10 fuel does not occur in Bu16. Isobutanol is not a corrosive agent (ethanol is highly corrosive) and will not damage fuel system parts. These characteristics, combined with a significantly higher energy content, make Bu16 fuel ideal for marine engines.

Fuel stabilizer is formulated specifically to protect your Indmar Marine Engine from today’s ethanol-enriched fuels. More ethanol means more sulfate salts, which results in more corrosion. Fuel treatment stabilizes all types of gasoline and provides superior metal corrosion protection from high levels of ethanol sulfate salts. Add fuel treatment at every fill-up to avoid unnecessary fuel system problems caused by ethanol.
Continuous in-season treatment:
Treat fuel no later than 7 days after purchase of fuel, best to treat fuel at time of purchase if possible.
Storage out-of-season treatment:
Treat fuel if it will sit in your tank for more than 30 days.
